More vintage films are coming to the Crystal Theatre! So far attendance is good and we are generating enough money to keep the films coming. August 29 we will show Blazing Saddles, that irreverent Mel Brooks 1974 film about building the railroads across the west. The famous one-liner from the film is “Badges?! We don’t need no stinking badges!”

Flag Day celebration on Rio Grand Trail near Town Hall June 14-19 was a huge success. Over 60 flags were installed along a busy cycling and pedestrian trail adjacent to Town Hall and Recreation Center. There was some vandalism regarding the Israeli flag, but juvenile offenders were caught and are being appropriately charged by the Town Police.

The project was supported by the Town and included this declaration:

This flag installation is provided through the partnership of Age Friendly Carbondale, the Town of Carbondale and the Carbondale Public Arts Commission, to honor the history and symbolism of the United States flag while also sharing and celebrating the diversity and unity of the local community. The display will be in place from June 13 – 22, 2026.

In addition to celebrating the U.S. flags prominently on display, the installation includes a curated collection of state flags representing the many places Carbondale residents have called home, as well as international flags reflecting the cultural backgrounds and global connections of Carbondale’s community members. To create this display, community members were invited to share the places they are from. The inclusion of state and international flags is central to the project’s purpose: to celebrate not only national identity but also the diverse experiences and perspectives that strengthen the town. In addition to its cultural and educational value, the flag display is designed to activate a public space, enhance community aesthetics and create a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

The vintage French film King of Hearts aired at the Crystal River Theater on June 20 with another full house. We are recovering costs so that we can continue this partnership.

A storyline in which a rich, death-obsessed young man of twenty meets, falls in love, and consummates his romance with a kooky, life-affirming seventy-nine-year-old woman. (Turner Classics).

It was only after the second year of showing the film that picketers in Minneapolis started demanding a new movie.

We hope you will go back in time with us, remember it was like to go to the movies back then (we were allowed to smoke, often in the balcony where seats with armrests had built-in ashtrays)

Pick up some AARP swag and vote for the next classic movie (1955-1975) we bring to the Crystal Theatre.
